10 Ways To Naturally Lighten Your Hair & Skip The Salon

There aren’t many people who would pass up a trip to the salon if it meant transforming your hair so you don’t have to do all of the work yourself. But sometimes, doing it yourself can be easier than you think. In most cases, it can be a lot easier on the wallet too. And if you are looking for ways to naturally lighten your hair without heading to the salon, then you’re in luck. Adding some highlights of lightening your shade to a different tone can make a world of difference, even if it doesn’t last forever. But sometimes, that can be the allure of lightening your hair by yourself.

Another upside is being able to do so without a ton of harmful chemicals. Whether the smells make you nauseated, you’re pregnant and can’t be around the chemicals themselves, or if you just prefer to do things naturally, these methods of lightening your hair without all of that filler can be the perfect route for you.

1. Lemons

You can use fresh lemon juice with distilled water to leave a notifiable, but not overly obvious, lightened hue on your hair. It will even help lighten darker hair without turning it the dreaded orange shade that a lot of brunettes who transition to blonde deal with.

2. Saltwater

You can also use a mixture of water and salt sprayed on your hair to get some lighter locks. As with anything related to the sun, the sun will eventually make the change fade away, but if you also invest in a UV-protecting shampoo and conditioner, you can extend the effects of this option.

3. Cinnamon And Honey

The colors of cinnamon and honey might not seem like they offer much in the way of lightening hair, but when mixed together to make a hair mask, they work. Mix together two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of cinnamon, and one tablespoon of olive oil in with your conditioner and apply on your hair. Leave it in for at least an hour or even overnight to get the desired results.

4. Chamomile

That’s right — chamomile isn’t just perfect for tea, although feel free to drink a cup while the color sets in your hair. For this one, you will need to brew a cup of chamomile tea and let it cool. Then, use the cooled tea to add streaks, highlights, or all over lightening to your hair.

Because olive oil has natural lightening agents, it can add subtle light tones to your hair if used properly and sparingly. It can leave your hair feeling a touch softer too. For this method, coat your hair in two tablespoons of olive oil and let it sit for a half hour or so. Then, rinse it out and wash your hair as usual.

6. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar might have a strong smell to it, but nothing is quite as overpowering as hair dye chemicals, so it could be worse. Combine a half cup each of apple cider vinegar and distilled water and spray it on your hair. After a half hour, rinse it out and take a look at your lightened hair.

If you prefer to go the cinnamon route with no honey added to it, you can still get a lightened effect on your hair. Just add two tablespoons of cinnamon to a half cup of conditioner and apply throughout your damp hair. Leave it on for a few hours or even overnight and rinse out afterward to see the effects.

8. Baking Soda

It might not be a natural food option, so to speak, like the other hair lightening techniques, but it’s still a natural alternative to chemical-laden hair dyes and bleaches. All you have to do is sprinkle some baking soda in your hair during your next shower and rub it in until it forms a sort of paste. Afterward, rinse it out and style your hair as you normally would.

It might seem counterproductive to add dark liquid to your hair in an effort to lighten it, but believe it or not, this is another solid option. Black tea has tannic acid, which is reliable for bringing out highlights in hair. So brew some strong black tea and, once it cools, pour it over your hair. After a half hour, rinse it out.

10. Rhubarb

This vegetable proves that you can easily have a healthy snack while lightening your hair, so it’s a total win-win. Simmer a few stalks in four cups of water for an hour and then use the resulting liquid as a rinse before and after your normal shampoo and conditioner routine in the shower. It may take a couple of tries to get to the lighter shade you want, but this is another effective option.

Some of these methods might be a little more obvious than others. And while you may prefer a more permanent look than some of these temporary options, sometimes a short-lived change can be a good thing. It’s far better to make a natural quick change that will soon be undone than to make a huge change you can’t go back on without adding more chemicals to your hair. So  if the goal is to experiment with lightening your hair to save money and do things naturally, these are easily your best bet.
